Playa Cocles, also known as Beach Break to many of the locals, is a stretch of beach 2 km south of Puerto Viejo center. The beach has the only life guard tower in the area and has been awarded a blue flag given by the Costa Rican government for the cleanliness of the beach and surrounding water.
The beach is great for intermediate surfers as it offers consistent right and left breaks that break on a sand bank close to shore. Due to strong currents the lifeguards place flags on the beach each morning signaling the safe areas to swim. The green flags indicate good areas to swim and the red flags indicate strong currents and rip tides.
From Puerto Viejo there is a beach trail that starts from the Salsa Brava Restaurant and continues towards Cocles Beach Break. The trail offers shade from the sun and is very picturesque with natural pools created by the coral reef and small creeks that you cross with only narrow wooden boards connecting you with the other side, the latter brings an element of fun especially if you try and ride over the creeks with a bicycle.

The island just off Playa Cocles is home to many species of bird the main one being the pelican. It is possible to swim out to the island but it is very difficult to get onto the island without cutting yourself on the sharp rock so we do not recommend it. The island also offers good snorkeling but you will have to wait until the sea is calm, whatever the conditions are please speak to the lifeguard, so that he can be aware of you so that he can inform you of the day’s currents.
The majority of surf schools and instructors teach from this beach as it is one of the few areas that does not break on the reef and which offers a consistent break. When the big swells come in the instructors will teach from Playa Negra as the surf gets too big in Cocles for beginners.
